How to Make Your Qualifications Stand Out

Anyone who has been through the process of building a CV and job hunting is likely to be familiar with the challenge many of us face when applying for jobs in an industry we haven’t worked before. Whatever the reason, often job applications make mention of the requirement for experience, however, we are forever asking the question, how do I get the experience if I can’t the job in the first place?
The obvious (textbook) answer to this problem is picking up some unpaid work experience, internships, attending industry events or even looking for similar roles that will allow you to transfer over. However, is there a chance that in completing your study you have picked up at least some kind of skills that will translate into experience?
Now I am in no way discounting the value of experience in business or any job, I mean you don’t learn to swim by reading, but one thing I find students often forget is that in completing their studies they do pick up a wide range of skills, skills that are definitely worth mentioning on their CV which could make the difference in getting that dream job.

Two key benefits of formal education include the acquisition of knowledge AND skills.
So, then the question becomes what’s the best way to go about listings these skills and capitalising on the time and money you have spent on upskilling by way of formal education? Pretty simple, document it in your CV!
In building or updating your CV you want to ensure you include all crucial sections such as your contact details, professional statement, previous work experience, key skills and of course your education and qualifications. Think simple formatting in either word or PDF format - as a lot of companies these days use recruiting software that automatically scans your CV for keywords and details.
Use your education and qualifications section to not only list the qualifications you have obtained but what they have delivered to you and what capability they have provided you with. For example, you would list the name of the qualification, where you obtained it, when you obtained it and what capability if provided you. For example:
2019 - Diploma of Accounting
Completing this diploma further established and developed my understanding of commercial and Australian taxation law and provided me with the educational requirement component for my registered tax agent certification.
Having completed all this good work by way of documenting your skills, experience, achievements, qualifications you may as well put all this good work to use by letting the world know. It’s often said, “it’s not what you know, it’s who knows that you know what you know” (say that fast 3 times over!) and a great platform for promoting yourself, your skills, qualifications, interests and experience is LinkedIn.
