Bachelor of Financial Planning

A unique Bachelor-level award!

Mentor Education provides specialist lecturers and tutors to deliver the Diploma of Financial Planning and the Advanced Diploma of Financial Planning as pathway qualifications to the University of Notre Dame Australia Bachelor of Financial Planning (3537).

You will be considered a student of The University of Notre Dame Australia. You will receive a student card and access to all The University of Notre Dame Australia student services.

Students will be enrolled in The University of Notre Dame Australia. The University of Notre Dame Australia awards the Bachelor of Financial Planning on completion.

Mentor Education's student support officers provide students with assistance in completing applications for entry into the awards.

  • Experienced financial advisers (who need to meet the 2024 government requirement that all financial advisers hold a minimum of a Bachelor degree)
  • Secondary school graduates (Year 12 or equivalent)
  • Aspiring financial advisers currently working in other industries.

The Bachelor of Financial Planning considers the professional needs and challenges of the modern financial planner. This means The Bachelor of Financial Planning has the hallmark of quality, giving you the keys to career success. It is the award of the future for current and future financial planners.

By 2024, all financial advisors must hold a minimum of a Bachelor degree. The Bachelor of Financial Planning is a dedicated financial services degree, helping you meet that requirement. Every unit of study has been developed to be professionally relevant, in a constantly changing financial services marketplace of digital natives.

The program addresses the key areas of financial planning identified by the Australian Financial Planning Association (FPAA) and is also being accredited. The Bachelor of Financial Planning award is nationally recognised.

The Corporations Amendment - Professional Standards of Financial Advisers Bill 2016. (CAPSFA Bill 2016)

The CAPSFA Bill 2016 mandates compulsory education requirements for both new and existing financial advisers, as well as:

  • supervision requirements for new advisers
  • ongoing professional development
  • a code of ethics for the industry
  • a compulsory exam (a common benchmark across the industry)

The Bachelor of Financial Planning is now legislated as the default standard for new students in the Financial Services industry who wish to become financial planners. This gives you the tools to meet the Government’s industry requirements.

Industry Specific, Relevant Content and Practical Case Studies

A survey conducted by CoreData Research Australia and Mentor Education (2015) indicated that most planners desire a professional industry, underpinned by credible qualifications. The result is The Professional Standards of Financial Advisers legislation.

The survey of 12,000 financial planners, 5,000 mortgage brokers and 5,000 accountants, as well as Mentor Education’s extensive database found that 4 out of 5 respondents see the value in a degree, exam and professional year and 75% of advisers support a Bachelor of Financial Planning.

The Bachelor of Financial Planning contains over 500 articles and videos, written by experienced, industry professionals, respected academics and corporate partners.

Standard duration

  • The standard duration, with no advanced standing is 3 years of full time study
  • With maximum advanced standing, you would need to complete 12 units, which could be achieved in less than 18 months
  • Part time study is available

Maximum Duration

The maximum timeframe that a student is permitted to complete in this award is 5 years. This period (including any periods of approved leave of absence) is from the date on which the student first enrolled in the course.

Study Options

  • Students can complete 20 of the 24 units online via the learning management systems (Brightspace and Blackboard)
  • Delivery of the three core curriculum units (Philosophy, Ethics, and Theology) is face-to-face over a two-day intensive in major capital cities in your home state. Online options may be available in some cases for students in remote locations.
  • Students will need to attend an invigilated exam at an approved exam centre in major capital cities of their home state.
  • Students will complete the Business Internship at a workplace approved by The University of Notre Dame Australia School of Business, Sydney faculty.

The Bachelor of Financial Planning award is nationally recognised.

Assessment

Assessment tasks for each unit of the Bachelor of Financial Planning may vary. Each unit of study contains a mix of: weekly quizzes, knowledge questions, participation in discussion groups and group work, case studies, presentations, essays and an invigilated examination.

Admission Requirements

There are no pre-requisites for this award. There is some flexibility in unusual circumstances where you do not meet the criteria. Contact Mentor Education to learn more or The University of Notre Dame Australia School of Business Sydney.

The University of Notre Dame Australia’s General Regulations and the School of Business Regulations stipulate the standard entry requirements for admission, including:

School Leavers

  • ATAR of 70 - Indicative only. (Obtained within the last five years); or
  • IB of 25+ - Indicative only. (Obtained within the last five years)

Post School Leaver / Mature Age Applicants

  • Successful completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate IV level qualification or higher from a recognised provider such as TAFE or an RTO; or
  • Other University Studies – The University of Notre Dame Australia will also consider applicants who have successfully completed a minimum of two units within a Bachelor’s Degree from another University; or
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) – This option is only available for applicants who are over 20 years of age as at 1 March in the year of admission. The required score for both the multiple-choice component and the written English component is 150. STAT results are valid for five years; or
  • Successful completion of The Notre Dame Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) or Foundation Year (FY).
